Tiger Tongue🐅
I have been fortunate enough to meet a great contact in Hong Kong. Over the past couple week he has gone through some of his local shops. I must say, it's been incredible to see things from a different culture.
A couple of the shops had some neat ingots. It is difficult to navigate through vintage Asian bullion due to the amount of counterfeit material that is out there. I am not an expert in that space by any means. I did however aquire several ingots. The first set I'm going to share here are known as "tiger tongues".
1500-1800th Laos and Thailand silver TIGER TONGUE ingot monetary unit. Old poured silver bar. Weight 2.89oz and 3.09oz.
The kingdom of Lan Xang Hom Kao was established in 1354 by Fa Ngu.These silver bars were called "Tiger Tongue" because of their long, flat, tongue-like shape
These ingots usual consist of mixed metals. Majority of which is silver. Traditionally 90% silver from my understanding. You will notice the lighter example has a couple stamps down the center. Which appears to be a snake..
This is why collecting precious metals can be an amazing experience. The individual I have come to know in Hong Kong has turned out to become a friend. I look forward to seeing where things go from here...

I love it! The only trouble would be counterfeits. How do you know if it is a Chinese counterfeit? They counterfeit PCGS slabs that even PCGS has trouble identifying them...

Agreed. My response would be getting an assay report done. The contents should be consistent with the metals used to manufacture these during that time period. Since they are a mixed metal. It should be a specific composition.

They were used as a form of currency. Value based on the total weight. Very interesting stuff...
