David C. Davis 1oz Silver Slug - Historical Discovery!

in #steemsilvergold6 years ago (edited)

It is no secret that I have a strong interest in David C. Davis silver ingots. I have published several articles here on Steemit that highlight some of the ingots I own. As well as discuss the history behind the David C. Davis company.

I am now going to share a quick story. These events took place less than 48hrs ago. This is a BIG DEAL to me and the vintage silver community. It has always been a challenge to try and research the history behind these companies. There is not a lot of public information to turn to. We as collectors need to find a way to fill in the missing pieces... Now listen to this .....

My buddy gave me the quick heads up on an EBay listing. It was a 1968 David C. DAVIS 1oz silver slug. I have a horrible overbearing force that causes me to immediatly buy anything David C. Davis. So yea, that piece landed in my mail box a couple days later! I opened up the package and threw it on my desk. Didn't even look at it. I assume I was probably busy chasing one of the kids around. . .

A few days pass and I'm sitting at my desk (last night). I thought that I should check out the pamphlet that comes with the 1oz slug. I was curious to see it's condition...

Below you will see a 1968 David C. Davis 1oz Silver Slug.

☝️The informational pamphlet which accompanies the slug and COA. It fits in a small pocket inside the plastic holder. I encourage anyone reading this article to read this pamphlet.

The David C. Davis slug photos above is what someone can expect to see after making the purchase. Now I am going to show you what fell out of the pamphlet pocket when I opened it up last night!

☝️This is an original newspaper article that was published during the release of the 1968 1oz silver slug!!! When I say it looks like it hasn't been touched in 50yrs. I mean every word of that! This newspaper article describes the relationship between owners. How they met and built the company. Where the slugs were struck!! Just a ton of information that helps paint the picture of how David C Davis operated as a company.

One of the factors in this newspaper article that stood out to me more than all the straight forward company operations. The begining of this news paper article starts off by saying "Dear Fellow Collectors." This is further validation that David C. Davis produced these slugs and ingots with the intention they would become collectible. They targeted the collector community back in 1968! Which is very unique. Majority of refiners produced silver for industrial purposes. In my eyes this validation makes David C. Davis the ultimate collector ingot!!

☝️You will also notice that this pamphlet has a stamp on it. All of the other pamphlets I have seen have never had a stamp on them. I wish I had an answer as to why this pamphlet has this stamp? The stamp indicates that the silver slug serial #1000 has been accepted into the Smithsonian institute and will be on display at the numismatic exhibit in Washington, DC.

These are the kinds of experiences that are priceless. Last night I was able to uncover the type of historical information no one has seen before. Being able to build a strongly supported back story behind a refiner is what helps develop the collector community. As well as the collectible demand behind that particular refiner. This is a fantastic example of how the pieces of the puzzle can be put together. At times, luck does plays a factor. But at the same time, I never would have found this if I didn't have an overbearing force causing me to immediatly purchase everything DAVID C. DAVIS!!!!!!

Amazing story. This story made me feel so happy for you! It is as if you had discovered a buried pirate trove with a note describing when and where these pieces were "acquired". Very proper for a #piratesunday.

@beckieg the history is very rich now. Feeling over the moon was an understatement👍. Certainly keep an eye out. These will be untouchable in the near future. They almost are now. A 5oz class Davis C. Davis almost sold for $3,000.00 earlier in the year.

That's awesome! It's tough to find info on some of the rarer rounds, bars, and ingots. You found a treasure trove there. Congrats, man. The compulsion pays off! I'm glad the piece ended up with someone who can appreciate the value and significance of the history as much as the silver.

Thank you for the kind words @themanwithnoname. The compulsion did paid off in this case. Not usually the case unfortunately lol.
