Kitchen Witch Sundays - Mulled Cider

We're finally getting to the time of year where nights are a cooler than the days and it's time to start thinking about pulling out thicker sheets and blankets. And that means it's time for mulled cider as well, so here's my favorite recipe for that!

You'll need the following;
- Apple juice
- Spices
- A slow cooker or large pan
Yep, that's literally it. Now I know my apple juice looks a bit odd but that's because it actually came out of a juicer. My roommate's dad has an apple tree in the back yard and often picks up the apples around this time of year and gives them to us. I made them all into apple butter last year, and I decided cider was on the menu this year!
The traditional mulled cider spices are cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and allspice. I prefer to do the whole herbs to keep from making the cider look muddy in the end product, but you can use whatever. I also make a variant with rose petals, lavender, juniper berries and elderberry that's pretty good so you can use almost any spices you like to flavor this stuff.

Put your apple juice and spices in your slow cooker or pan. Set the slow cooker on high or your stove to medium-high and leave it for 7-8 hours, stirring occassionally.

Remove the mixture from heat (turn the stove or slow cooker off) and let cool, then strain into your preferred containers and viola.
I used some cheesecloth and a funnel to strain this, honestly. Took out most of the gunk that was in there from the juicer and the solid spices as well. And yes, that is an alcohol bottle - an old bottle of some kind of apple whiskey that came from my grandmother's house. Makes perfect storage for the cider as it sits in my fridge and completely chills overnight so I can drink it tomorrow :D
Banner was made by me in Photoshop. All other pictures here were taken by me specifically for this post. I have been a home cook for over a decade, and any questions or comments about this recipe are encouraged!

You had me at "nights are cooler" - LOL! And funny thing - I just posted a silly graphic on FB yesterday having to do with fall ("Is it Halloween yet? My boo-ilogical clock is ticking"), and now I'm really looking forward to it! Looks like a yummy cider recipe - thanks for sharing it!
Pssh, as far as I'm concerned it's Halloween from the first of August to the thirty-first of October. I'm already seeing the decorations out and about and purchased some orange and black lights to back light my streaming set.
But yeah it was like...62? last night as opposed to the 80+ days, though out here it looks like we're in for a few days of rain so it's hovering closer to 70 and I'm fine with that :D
Thanks for commenting. It's yummy indeed, I enjoyed a heated-up mug of it this morning when I got up and it's so worth the hours it has to sit in the slow cooker XD
Yep, we've had a respite from the heat here too - in fact, when I walked outside this morning, I almost considered going back in for a sweatshirt, because it was a chilly 67. LOL!
And yeah, I forever have Halloween on the brain as well. Oh, and you're very welcome - looking forward to doing some of your mulled cider in the very near future. 😊
Yum! That actually makes me wish for winter, which I normally hate :D
Haha, thanks! I actually love winter in general, but stuff like this makes it so much better :)
You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:
It should be occasionally instead of occassionally.
