A prequel to hit US mafia show "The Sopranos" is being produced as a motion picture, perhaps rejoining some of TV's most darling characters, New Line Cinema said on Thursday.

N e w Line, a unit of Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros, said it has purchased the screenplay "The Many Saints of Newark" from arrangement maker David Chase and individual "Sopranos" essayist Lawrence Konner.

T h e script is set amid the social and racial tumult of 1960s Newark, New Jersey, and will center around strains between ethnic Italians and African-Americans.

N e w Line said the film is relied upon to incorporate a few characters from the Emmy-winning arrangement that finished in 2007. The show was credited with introducing TV's new brilliant period of muddled characters and testing storylines, and also transforming HBO into an industry behemoth.

There was no set release date and no throwing declaration.

"Sopranos" star James Gandolfini kicked the bucket in 2013 of a heart assault at age 51, and supporting performing artist Frank Vincent, who played horde supervisor Phil Leotardo, passed on one year ago.

"D a v i d, is an unbelievable storyteller and we, alongside our associates at HBO, are excited that he has chosen to return to, and broaden, the Soprano universe in an element film," Emmerich said in an announcement.

N o chief is connected to the film yet, New Line said.
