Traffic Problems & How They Reflect Social Issues

in #anarchy10 years ago (edited)

Consider the following: ..."any attempt to preferentially restrict the natural free distribution of traffic, whether by HOV or HOT (High Occupancy Toll) operation, made overall congestion and emissions worse…"
This was in regard to a county meeting about toll roads in Texas(http://austincountynewsonline.com/bombshell-senators-find-tolls-charged-roads-paid/). But it holds an important point when we look more closely.

So let's generalize it a bit so we can see the scope of what this implies:
Any attempt to preferentially restrict the natural and free actions of beings, makes overall problems worse.

We see this all the time. Let's look at drug use. As drugs have been 'restricted' in production, distribution and use, there has been more violence, more quality issues, more abuse, more dependency, more of all the problems that were the reasons used to create the restrictions in the first place.
Restricting the natural order(what will happen without 'restrictions') always makes the problems being 'addressed' worse and even adds problems to the equation.

If we refer to Spontaneous Order and review history(particularly that of private ventures and unregulated regions), we get a clearer picture of how this applies not only to biological systems or road systems but to social systems.
A system that is not regulated will self-regulate out of self-preservation and self-interest. It will deal with problems as they arise more fluidly as there is less need to reach consensus(or seek permission or approval) and the problem is less likely to return as the system is free to implement whatever preventative measures necessary much sooner.

(communities tend to network as individuals while governments use hierachal systems and compartmentalization)

Government is slow, behind the times and unwilling to change, especially when it needs to reverse decisions. It takes months, even years, to deal with the smallest of issues. A great example is the instance in which Congress convened to discuss the brass balls that were being sold and attached to the hitches of trucks. It took weeks for them to conclude they would do NOTHING. And had they decided to do something, it would have been weeks or even months before any effect would be had. And likely that effect would be an increase in the criminalization of non-violent persons and 'witch-hunts' for those that would dare defy the authority.

The individual and the groups we voluntarily participate in are much more capable of quickly, decisively and effectively addressing issues in our lives because we know what the problem is, it is more relevant to us, we know what we are and aren't willing to do or not do, et cetera. We are able to adapt our actions as we need far less debate and discussion to receive consensus. That we are voluntarily n these groups typically means we are of like mind and so it is less likely for us to become 'gridlocked'. That which requires time, energy, labor(resources) will be done with more efficiency and far more effectively because it the cost is directly on us and we want it to be worth what we pay for it.

The bigger the system and the more divided, regionally and philosophically, the less effective and efficient it is. We see this through nature and we see it everyday in the costs of running government to have it do things that people could do on their own or as communities far more cost-effectively with better quality and more tailored to suit their needs. There is no 'universal' solution to the problems we demand government engage because each country, each province, each county, each city, each neighborhood and each person has different needs, resources, expectations and the like. To attempt to apply universal or sem-global solutions to everyone is ridiculous and wasteful. Worse, it has resulted in some of the most horrific and detrimental incidents and periods throughout history.

Yes, and this is an area where public choice theory and the work of Elinor Ostrom would probably work well. Good post - resteeming to get some more exposure!
