Dear botanists,

today I want to show you the flowering plant with the largest inflorescence in the world: The titan arum. I grows at high speed, can reach up to 3 meters and to smells to high heaven.

Liebe Botaniker,

heute möchte ich euch die größte Blüte der Welt zeigen: Die Titanenwurz. Sie wächst in rasendem Tempo, kann über 3 Meter groß werden und stinkt zum Himmel.

Giant misshapen Phallus

I was able to see the blooming blossom of the titan arum (amorphophallus titanum), which literally means "giant misshapen phallus", at the Botanic Gardens of Bonn in 2009.

Due to its odor, which is like the smell of a rotting corpse or carcass, the titan arum is characterized as a carrion flower, and is also known as the corpse flower, or corpse plant (Indonesian: bunga bangkai – bunga means flower, while bangkai can be translated as corpse, cadaver, or carrion).

Unförmiger Riesenpenis

Ich konnte die Blüte einer Titanenwurz (Amorphophallus titanum), was wörtlich etwa „unförmiger Riesenpenis“ bedeutet, 2009 im Botanischen Garten in Bonn bestaunen.

Die Titanenwurz [...] ist eine auf Sumatra heimische Pflanzenart, die zur Familie der Aronstabgewächse (Araceae) gehört. Sie bringt den größten unverzweigten Blütenstand im Pflanzenreich hervor. Die bis drei Meter hohe Blume sondert einen an den Urwald angepassten Aasgeruch ab und lockt damit Kurzflügler und Aaskäfer an, die für ihre Bestäubung sorgen.

The cadaveric odor didn't hold the people back from coming in flocks to see the titan arum.

The plant just develops a inflorescence every few years and if it's blooming, it lasts for just 3 days. At the first day the bud opens and at the second day it is in full bloom. But at the third day it already starts to collapse.

Der Aasgeruch hat damals die Leute nicht davon abgehalten, die Blüte in Scharen zu besuchen.

Die Titanenwurz blüht nur alle paar Jahre und dann gerade mal drei Tage. Am ersten Tag öffnet sich die Knospe und schon am zweiten Tag steht sie in voller Blüte. Aber bereits am dritten Tag fällt sie wieder in sich zusammen.

The titan arum has been discovered and scientifically described in 1878 by Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari.
