Welcoming MY 2018

Receiving 2018 was a bit quiet for us. We did not go home for festive holidays (we are living abroad). But we had as much as fun as well. We Filipinos, always carry our traditions and customs where ever we are. It has become our norms and a part of our identity.

One of our traditions is to display 12 round fruits for good lucks. 12 represents month of the year and round represents money.

My table full of round fruits, this was receiving 2018

Welcoming My 2019

Having 2019 was a blast! It was special because i have received my beautiful present (My second baby). It was even special because my parents came all the way from Philippines to support me from my delivery and to spend festive holidays here in UAE.

We did not cook much this new year, we just had a traditional delicious noodle and a glass of Baileys. That was more than enough for us. Our hearts is filled with joy as we share our stories and laughters whilst drinking. I enjoyed throwing lots of jokes to my parents.

Philippines is rich in traditions, customs and beliefs. Even some are bizarre and funny, we try do it anyway every year. Almost all Filipino household families practice this beliefs.

These are some common Beliefs we practice during New Year's eve

  • Jump as high as you can when the clock strucks exactly 12 midnight: This is to become taller. (I did it every year when i was young, but it didn't change my height, I'm still 4ft 11’) Haha.

  • Make very loud noises during New year's eve: It is to drive away bad luck or bad spirit. (my Father do it with very loud firecrackers, I do it with trumpets and banging the pots and pans.

  • Lights should be all open. Rice dispenser should be open: It is believed to welcome a bright New Year and abundance of food.

  • Wearing Polka dots clothes: It is believed to bring good fortune, polka dots resemble coins which represents money.

  • Throwing coins around the house: It attracts money in to the household. (My mother used to do these, she will throw loads of coins in the living room, and we children is set to race to pick all the coins to keep it... This was soo much fun!

  • Sticky rice or Glutinous rice: It’s stands for harmony and unity in the family.

  • We eat Noodles: We called it pancit in tagalog (native language). The long strands of noodles represents long life.

It may be funny, But as they say, there is no harm in believing. It might be even bring you good luck! So, why not try ;) It is of my pleasure to share our rich culture in this beautiful community.

May this year brings you a fruitful and prosperous New year.

Thank you and a happy 2019!
