THE MAY DAY .

The first of may has been considered a very importance day in english tradition for many hundred of years , the first of may was celebrated as the day when summer began . the cold days of bleak winter were supposed to have finished and the warm , long days of summer had come .even now,in many schools and villages, a girl is chosen to be queen of the may . she usually wears a pretty white frock and crown of white may flowers. on her shoulders she wears a red cloak , often known as a train, which falls to the ground behind her. two children are chosen to be her attendants and they carry the train to prevent it dragging along the dusty ground.

Many english traditional dances are performed on may day which is the name usually given to the first day of may.
one of the best known of these is the may pole dance of which there are many variatons , a tall pole with many coloured ribbons fastened to the top is set up. the dancers each take hold of an end of ribbon and dance around the pole and each other, twisting the ribbon in and out until the pole is partly covered with pattern woven in coloured ribbons.

May day is not only remembered in england , it is known throughout the world but for different reasons in different countries , may 1st is the day when communist celebrates the begining of the communist revolution of 1917 russia.
the word "may day" is also used internationally as a distress signal.
