Steemit #tag issues - Your advice please

So, I have come across a problem with steemit tags, and its about 'ownership' which is probably the wrong word, but that's how the issue has unraveled. I'm looking for some good feedback on this, as so far the information I can find on steemit, doesn't appear to cover this issue, so your feedback would be most helpful.

Here's the problem, and this is by way of an example, and not the tags in question.

Lets say I have a dog, and I like to take photo's of my dog and post one a day on steemit, and I use the appropriate tags 'dog' 'pets' 'dog photo' 'my dog of the day photo', or whatever I feel appropriate for my blog.

Now lets say that someone else has used or created the tag "my dog of the day photo" for either competition purposes or what have you. Soon after releasing my dog photo, I get a polite warning from another steemit participant, who insists that I should not use this tag unless I am entering 'their' competition, and if I persist in doing so, I will be flagged by them. I have to say here, that 'my dog of the day photo' isn't actually a very good example, as the tags I have issue with are more generic - but this is just an example. Now I'm not trying to tread on anyone's toes, and I'm not using a tag that is inappropriate or simply trying to pick up a few extra votes, which I know people do, and I understand that - but, my dog of the day photo is just that its my dog of the day photo, and I release one a day and I use that tag as it is most appropriate.

Where do we stand on such an issue - I get the impression that people who create tag's have the notion that they own the tag, as if somehow registering a URL with a domain registration company. I understand etiquette, and that tag abuse is a rather annoying issue. But if the tag is appropriate, and correctly applied contextually to a blog where do we stand.

Can someone flag me for using a tag that they created, for my blog when it is appropriate use. Someone obviously created the tags cooking, or recipe, or food etc - so where is the line drawn, and what right do people have for flagging under such circumstances. Can I not put 'food' or 'recipe' simply because someone used it before me and claim ownership for whatever reason - surely if its not being abused, and is appropriate, its fair game, and if anything, helps that tag along its way to popularity - competition or not.

If I consider someone flagging me as wrong under such circumstances, what action can I take in response, after having communicated and reasoned the issue to no avail.

My personal opinion on this, is that if someone wishes to create a tag for competition purposes of something specific to their group activity, then they should have the good sense not to use a generic tag for their group, whether that tag existed before or whether they are the first users or 'creators' of that tag.

Your views please. Or if there are regulations I am unaware of, please advise.

Many thanks.

Using complicated tags for these kind of competitions is probably the way to go but how do we get that to the masses when you have only 3 views eh :-)

Quite right @bubke, that's exactly my point, but how do we defend ourselves against flaggers who claim a generic tag as their own, e.g ... I flag you because you use the tag 'food' - is there some process to resolve this - moderators or whatever. What you say is just common sense, but it seems some don't have that common sense, and 'I' am the one who will be flagged .. what to do :(

I don't see why anyone would have the right to claim a common tag so i would just use it. If they want to start a flag war, that's their problem. I guess they will have a reputation far lower than yours as well which means they can not really flag you i think...

Nobody should have a right to claim ownership of tags, thst is preposterous. If you are flagged for this, report it to steemcleaners.

Ty @kooshikoo - I never knew about steemcleaners, I'll check that out and maybe ask. :)
