The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of those places you hear about your whole life but are still surprised and overwhelmed when you finally do see it. Layer upon layer of natural majesty. Lol. I don't want to sound too over the top but it truly is a place where simple words don't do it justice. There is a mystical sense to it, big magic.

I've heard that the average person spends 17 minutes actually looking at the canyon. Being Americans probably make up the majority of those views I'm not too surprised. We spend all our effort getting someplace and forgetting the importance of being there. Then off to the next place for 17 minutes. When you come to visit this place, leave enough time to actually stay. From historic lodges to cabins, to RV lots, there's a place for you.

Beyond the outlooks and points of interest, there are endless little spots along the rim you can search out and find solitude. The canyon is so big it seems to absorb all sound and motion and if you let it, it will absorb you too. Stop and catch your breath and just be for as long as you can, it's time well spent.

While here don't get caught up trying to find the best place to see the canyon, they're all good. But you should make the effort to get out before dawn and catch the sunrise, and maybe search out a special place for it.

Also, know you don't have to be a world-class trekker to descend into the canyon and further experience this grand expanse. There are a number of trails and short hikes that will take you down to lower outlooks, and back again, but will feel like you've left to go back in time. And in fact, you have.
