Follow the yellow-shroomed road
It was just supposed to be a little hike.
A small group of friends on top of a privately-owned mountain, a little cooking fire, a little work on the trail we're carving around the side of a hill to make it easier to get to the million-dollar view without having to go up OVER the hill. Just a Saturday afternoon.
Then someone spots a chanterelle mushroom over a bank, peeking egg-yolk-yellow between two ferns, and suddenly we're scaling the side of a mountain foraging with the fervor of woods-folk who haven't eaten in weeks.
See them? They were everywhere. EVERYWHERE.
You'd think we'd be satisfied with a hatful, but nope. The more we looked, the more we found. This was the biggest chanterelle I've ever seen in my life:
Until I found this one 10 minutes later:
Guess what's for supper every night this week, fried in butter?
A few weeks ago, it was raspberries. Now it's chanterelles. To my chagrin, I saw the sun-burnt remains of some enormous morels, so note to self for next year: look to the mountain for morels earlier in summer!
Just a little Monday post to say that sustenance is sometimes found when you least expect it. I hope you had a nice weekend.

STOPWhoa. Those are seriously amazing finds. I think I need to go hike my woods because those sure are good in butter.
I might just have to get out in my local woods this weekend for some hiking as well!
