THE DIARY GAME SEASON 3 - 10/05/2021

Hello fellow steemians!

Hope you all are doing great. I'm new to this community and really looking forward to post interesting articles. If you are interested, you can always click on my achievement link at the end of this post and follow me.

First of all I'll tell you a little about myself. Born and raised in the small but beautiful coastal city of Galle in Sri Lanka, i spent my whole childhood and teenage years bathing in the salty wind and listening to the mysterious hum of the sea. After graduating high school, I received a scholarship to study medicine in Russian Federation. So i packed my bags and arrived in Moscow where i currently reside.

As a medical student, I was called upon by the Moscow Health department to work as frontline health worker in the fight against Covid pandemy. Today was another 12 hour shift i gladly spent working with doctors and nurses in examining and treating patients who are either getting tested for coronavirus or receiving treatment after being tested positive for the virus.

My shift starts at 8 a.m. in the morning. After entering the premises and getting all the necessary preacuations such as washing my hands, wearing gloves and masks, I go to the staging area where they have stored all the swab samples from the other day and bring it to my workstation. Then I have to manually put in the data from the test tubes to hte computer program such as patient name, age, contact information, insurance policy and take a softcopy for each of the samples. Then i neatly stack the samples and the printouts in order for the time being.

Then comes the most interesting part of the day. A senior dcotor comes with all the house calls they received for the day for PCR testing. There are usually up to 12-13 house calls a day. But today was a slow day. I had only 4 house calls. So i go in to the staging area, put on my personal protective gear and find the medical service vehicle assigned for me today. Then i give my driver the addresses and he take me to the houses. The patients are usually pretty compliant and help me however they can. Taking swabs from nasal cavity and throat is not a comfortable experience for the patient. Also I have to make sure that the swabs are taken correctly to avoid false postives. After taking swabs, i put it in the test tube and write down the patient name and date of birth, so that they are not missplaced.

After I visit all the houses assigned to me, i return to the hospital and enter patient information in the system and tak a soft copy as i did in the morning. Then I take all the samples and deliver them to the laboratory for testing. Usually after that I take my lunch around 4 p.m. and wait for more samples. While waiting I go around the staging area and help doctors who are examining patients.

My shift ends at 8 p.m. in the evening. after that, i come back to my hostel and take dinner with my friends and we spend some time together. As the day was so tiring, i excuse myself and come to my room to rest. As a medical student I am really happy that i can contribute in the fight against pandemy at least in such a small way.
