Planting Peppers Using Paper Towels

in #homesteading8 years ago

Seven days ago I placed 3 varieties of peppers seeds into a moist paper towel. The moist paper towel method is something @mericanhomestead introduced our family to several years ago. I must admit this is the first year I am using this method!

To start you need a few supplies: moist not saturated paper towel, zip loc bag, a permanent marker, and pepper seeds. Place you moist paper towel on a flat surface and fold it in half. Next place seeds on half of the paper towel (1/4 of a full sheet). Fold the towel in half and place the towel into the zip loc bag and seal it. Simply write the date and variety on the bag and place in a warm location in you home. We placed ours on the mantel of the fireplace.

After 7-10 days this is what you see!

Now you need to remove the seeds from the moist paper towel and place them in moist soil.

Simply cover the sees with 1/4 inch of dirt then moisten the soil again.

We like using a spray bottle at our house.

In total we planted 47 seeds and 45 of them had tails in 7 short days. After one week I think this method is going to be not only successful but better than our family traditional method of simply planting the peppers in soil. Thanks Zac!

What tricks do you use for growing seeds?

Thanks for commenting and sharing with our fellow Steemit family!

That's a great tip! I might use the same method for some of mine. It can't hurt! Thanks for sharing. :)

What a great idea! Thanks for letting us in on this simple secret!

Wow! When I see posts like this one...I calm down to learn.

I have seen him do that before but still have not tried it myself. I normally just take the seeds and put them in dixie cups with some nice soil mixture, water them and put them in the south facing window. I would say overall this method has worked for the most part for me!

I like the idea of using dixie cups. Will the plant root through the cups or do you have to remove them from the cup?

I have done both. I remove them from the cup if it has some sort of waxy lining on it. If it is one of the more paper like cups then sometimes I just remove the bottom and then plant the whole thing in the ground. The cup at that point just disintegrates. This year I have the first kind so I will have to transplant the plants!

Good information, thank you!

How are you peppers doing? I have cabbage and cauliflower coming up!

Good news on the cabbage and cauliflower! The peppers are sprouting through the soil today, good feeling. I just wrote a post on our tomatoes they are coming through also.

The cauliflower came up first and I was not so sure about the cabbage but after a little while long they made it! As for tomatoes, not time to start those yet where I am!
