How often does Temporary become Permanent?
3 Years ago we needed a place to keep our sheep because our 5 strand barb wire parameter fence doesn't hold them in once your pasture is dead. So we rapidly came up with a plan to separate our 1/2 acre chicken run into 2 runs since it has a tight fence around it. We had no plans to keep it up longer than 4-5 months so I simply installed T posts every 8 feed and took some welded wire fence and attached it with baling wire...a must have on any homestead! It has now been 3 years and the fence looks terrible since it was not installed correctly. So our great idea turned into an eye sore near the front of our homestead. 
The fence was in such poor shape we couldn't use it for any additional projects on the homestead, so we threw it on our trailer which is headed for our local recycling company. Amazingly we found additional items to put on the trailer.
I am writing this article to say one simple thing...I need to take the time to "showcase" our place. No matter how much work you do on your homestead if you don't keep things nice and tidy most of your efforts are overlooked when you have visitors. They simply see all the stuff you have 'half' done or in our case almost tore down and they don't see how great and wonderful living on a homestead can be!
Today, I installed all the new wooden post for our permanent fence that will separate our chicken run. Once it is completed in late winter I will post the new fence and share it with our friends! 
In the meantime we are going to keep the area open for our chickens all winter so they can clean up our garden area.

We've had similar experiences on our urban homesteading journey. I've found that putting in that extra effort to make things "pretty" as well as functional always makes me feel like the extra effort is worth it. Can't wait to see the finished product!

With only being on our homestead for 5 months, everything looks pretty in-construction-process right now. I hope that visitors understand that the "unkempt" pile of wood between those trees is being sorted for future use, or that the pile of stones over there is about to be turned into a retaining wall, etc. It's all a process, that's for sure!
Before Sabbath, we always take the time to clean everything up as much as possible. Having that weekly tidy-up really helps keep things maintained.
Love seeing the chickens among the garden stuff. We just have a few, but I am so excited to be free-ranging them!

We're in Southern Missouri, so not too far from you (I think?) Things were incredibly busy over the summer with getting our first animals, trying to make the structures on the land useable, and wresting our 12 acres from the brink of being wild, but we're doing well!
