A few kilometers east of the Cabo de Sao Vicente the peninsula Ponta de Sagres protrudes into the Atlantic sea. After a legend the nautical school of Henry the Navigator was located on this island which is accordingly praised as the nucleus of Portuguese seafaring.

While previously almost insurmountable, today the passage through the Fortaleza is granted to everyone willing to to buy a visitor ticket. :)

Let's have a look:

Another predestined spot for a lighthouse. The peninsula belonged to the first point of call of returning ships since the early seafaring days.

In more recent times a labyrinth was installed towards the center of the island.

From a distance the shape reminded me of a multi-level birthday cake. Let's have a look inside.

In 1928 a peculiar circular figure was discovered on the peninsula and gradually uncovered. A circular shape with 43 m in diameter with 42 segments, all lined with boulders of different sizes. The structure is called "wind rose", but its origin is still unknown today. Rather than being a nautical construction it is assumed that it had served as kind of sundial.

I hope you enjoyed visiting the Ponta de Sagres. Until next time!

Love the shot with the cannon - The post reminds me of my Lego tines playing the Pirate Theme 😍

Absolutely! It didn't pop up to me but now that bring it up I can very well relate to these memories :D

i have always wanted to travel to Portugal. Many of my friends who have been say it is a great value and for the most part has pretty sweet weather.

My favorite shots are the labyrinth ones... reminds me of a number of video-games I have played.

I have been to Portugal for the third time now and it remains to be one of my favourite travel destinations. Nice and friendly people, great food and an exciting history which you can encounter at every turn. And all this at an attractive price level (in relation to EU standards).

Thanks for stopping by! I believe you are the first 80er I could welcome to my blog ;)

Cheers!

about that labyrinth. Did it have any sort of practical purpose in relation to the rest of the building or was it simply for looks or tourism? Maybe they didn't tell you. I'm curious though.

Oh yes, it has a purpose, I didn't mention that in my post.

This is the view down when standing in the center of the labyrinth:

A deep pit that extends through the entire rock down to the sea. This is where the monster of the island dwells. One can hear it howling there since centuries. Some say, however, that it is only the sound of the surf rising from the depth ;)

Fantastic place. Even i have been in many places i have never been in portugal.
For me these pictures looks like very similar like in malta😊

Wow what a breath taking bunch of photos! They really give you that edge of the land feeling! All those beautifully sandy earthy tones too! Amazing!

Thank you! The edge of the land feeling comes up there indeed!

Really cool! This reminds me of the Castillo de San Marcos, which is a Spanish built fort in St Augustine Florida.

I'm guessing it is a pretty standard coastal setup for the day.

Stunning landscapes. I can also see some nice backgrounds for your next LMAC challenges here hehe :)

One of them I had used already ;)

I really enjoyed visiting Ponta de Sagres, through your beautiful photos and write-up!!

Thank you, glad to hear that!

Impressive photo-report, and what a magnificent sight to see!
