Saturn devouring his sons
Painted directly onto the plaster walls of his farmhouse,Saturn devouring his sons, belongs to the series of so - called " Black paintings",is one of goya's most horrifying and unforgettable painting. Goya did not write about these paintings and made no effort to name them. No doubt these paintings reflected his increasing depression and the fear of his approaching death.
The painting is based on the myth of a Roman god Saturn feared that he will be overthrown by one of his son,so he ate them all one by one the movement they were born.
At the end his wife hide her last son Jupiter and as per the prediction Jupiter overthrew Saturn.
This work was not meant to be seen by the public but thanks to his grandson and restorers who transfered these murals on canvas and let the world knew what Goya went through in his last years.
