Will You Be There? - (Original Poem)
It’s still a few hours till morning
The darkness hovers over the parking lot
The moonlight illuminates his rusted Chevy
Double parked across two parking spots
He’s slumped over in the backseat
Trying to get 40 winks, although 20 will get him through
The question he keeps pondering
Waking from a fitful sleep and wondering
Will you be there when he gets there?
He stops for a four dollar breakfast
Bacon and eggs and extra strong coffee
He tipped the waitress a dollar
Her face was gentle, her nametag said Bonnie.
It’s time for him to be on his way again
For every mile behind him there are three ahead
Driving through the endless Texas oilfields
One question blinds him like the sun shining through the windshield
Will you be there when he gets there?
The sun has gone down again
Disappearing in the west, it’s daily ritual
He rubs his eyes and he says a prayer
Even though he’s not the least bit spiritual
He prays to God that when the morning comes
That he finally makes it to his destination
Though he never expected to hear from a God he disavowed
Just to make he sure he didn’t miss it, he turned the radio down
Will you be there when he gets there?
Morning comes and he’s in her hometown
Finally made it after what seemed like an eternity
Pulls onto her street and parks the car
He rings her doorbell and it chimes ominously
He stood there waiting for a sign one way or another
The front door looking like it was looming 20 feet tall
The door creaks open and it was a mother
She says her daughter’s moved on, she has another
I guess that answers his question
She won’t be there when he gets there

Very heartfelt... I think sometimes the anticipation of the unknown from another is almost as grueling as the final answer. Then again... Great read.
Thank you. It can also be that deep down we already know the answer, but we hang on to any hope that the answer will be different in the end.
Amazing poem! Enjoyed reading through it! :)
Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it. :)
Very deep and profound poem, I love the set up and the repetition, I dislike repetition but you have used it well here in your poem, and such a sad but honest reality. He shall find another. Thanks for sharing, upvoted
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. You're right, some doors close and others open. Live goes on.
Yes indeed, but the pain lingers for a long time, and resurfaces at the most unexpected of times. Such a relatable piece. Again, nice artwork
Yes, happiness can be a very strong emotion, but no emotion lingers like pain.
Wise words indeed, happiness is but a fleeting moment which must be nurtured and rekindled often. Pain seems self sustaining! Deep lol
sad beautiful poem
Thank you @billykeed
Wow. I really felt this one.
That's a big compliment. If I can't make people feel something then I am not accomplishing anything with my work. Thanks @ericvancewalton.
I like sad endings
