Better Call Saul - Bagman (ENG - ITA)
There are episodes that remain forever in the collective imagination.
Last week, analyzing the previous episode of Better Call Saul, I was talking about how this crazy TV series managed to be constantly cult, constantly important for itself, constantly decisive at all times.
I confirm it, but at the same time I admit that I was denied just this week.
The eighth episode of this fifth season, in fact, will remain in the memory of every fan of Better Call Saul.
Vince Gilligan himself admitted that this was the most difficult episode he shot in his career as a director.
A good 5 days of shooting, under a scorching sun, in the desert.
An episode as unforgettable as it was decisive for the development of Saul's character and not only that.
From the very first minutes we realize how much Jimmy is consciously deciding to become Saul.
It's a subtle but noisy passage, he explodes like a bomb.
In fact, Jimmy chooses to get his hands dirty for money.
That's kind of what happened with Breaking Bad.
Wait a minute.
A pass, even there in season five, where the main character might let it go, settle for it, but he doesn't.
It's a moment that defines the ultimate transition from Walter White to Heisenberg as much as Jimmy McGill to Saul Goodman.
Everything else is consequences.
The misadventures.
The heat.
The bullets.
The thirst.
Survival.
They are the consequences of that choice made before we finally ploughed through the door of Lalo prison.
That moment is cathartic, definitive.
There is no turning back and Gilligan uses all his art, all his infinite class to show it to us by shooting a perfect episode in everything, photography, rhythm, direction, interpretations.
Pure class.
Esistono episodi che restano per sempre nell'immaginario collettivo.
La scorsa settimana, analizzando l'episodio precedente di Better Call Saul, vi parlavo di come questa serie tv pazzesca riuscisse ad essere costantemente cult, costantemente importante per se stessa, costantemente decisiva in ogni momento.
Lo confermo ma contestualmente ammetto di essere stato smentito proprio questa settimana.
L'ottavo episodio di questa quinta stagione, resterà infatti nella memoria di ogni fan di Better Call Saul.
Lo stesso Vince Gilligan ha ammesso che questo è stato l'episodio più difficile che abbia girato nella sua carriera da regista.
Ben 5 giorni di riprese, sotto un sole cocente, nel deserto.
Un episodio indimenticabile quanto decisivo per lo sviluppo del personaggio di Saul e non solo.
Sin dai primi minuti ci rendiamo conto di quanto Jimmy stia decidendo consciamente di diventerà Saul.
E' un passaggio sottile ma che fa rumore, esplode come una bomba.
Jimmy sceglie infatti di sporcarsi le mani in cambio di soldi.
E' un po quello che accadde con Breaking Bad.
Un momento.
Un passaggio, anche li nella quinta stagione, in cui il protagonista potrebbe lasciar correre, accontentarsi, ma non lo fa.
E' un momento che definisce il passaggio definitivo da Walter White ad Heisenberg tanto quanto da Jimmy McGill a Saul Goodman.
Tutto il resto sono conseguenze.
Le disavventure.
Il caldo.
Le pallottole.
La sete.
La sopravvivenza.
Sono conseguenze di quella scelta fatta prima di solcare definitivamente la porta della prigione di Lalo.
Quel momento è catartico, è definitivo.
Non si torna più indietro e Gilligan impiega tutta la sua arte, tutta la sua infinita classe nel mostrarcelo girando un episodio perfetto in tutto, fotografia, ritmo, regia, interpretazioni.
Classe pura.
