Bad Choice Road (Better Call Saul)
For those who, like me, consider Breaking Bad unattainable, asking this question is in itself a statement of esteem.
One episode after the end of the fifth, beautiful, season, Better Call Saul places a decisive episode, in which there are many turning points, continuing what we saw in the exceptional "Bagman".
There is a lot of Breaking Bad in this episode.
Not only in the photography, in the style, in the atmosphere, always faithful to the "mother" series, but also a lot more.
There are some fierce and elegant analogies in the turning points of this episode.
Kim rummaging through the bag finding an element of "breaking" or collision with "Jimmy". What did she remind you of?
Hank on the toilet reading that book, brooding over that signature, that dedication.
Mike's wild ride to Jimmy's house what does he remember other than WW's car ride in Ozymandias?
Lalo on the doorstep, cold and cynical mirror of Jessie's frightened face at the end of season three of Breaking Bad.
It's a constant reminder of the glory of the TV series from which this incredible spinoff is drawn.
And deeper into it are the choices, the twists of the characters.
Mike who wants to redeem himself by saving Nacho.
Jimmy who'd want to do it by running into court to defend a client.
Kim leaving Mesa Verde to pursue pro bono cases.
We are faced with 3 Walter Whites, very different from WW and between them but who undertake a "Bad Choice Road" that will lead them to ruin. Mike and Jimmy know they won't have a bright future, we know nothing about Kim since she never appeared in Breaking Bad. And the writers play with the audience throughout the episode, giving us the continuous impression that Kim could die at any moment.
This "game" gives an incredible tension to the episode, made even more effective by the credibility of the whole staging.
Yet another sensational episode of Better Call Saul that is currently the best series of 2020, and beyond.
Ad un episodio dal termine della quinta, bellissima, stagione, Better Call Saul piazza un episodio decisivo, nel quale ci sono tanti punti di svolta, proseguendo quanto visto nell'eccezionale "Bagman".
C'è tantissimo di Breaking Bad in questo episodio.
Non solo nella fotografia, nello stile, nell'atmosfera, da sempre fedele alla serie "madre" ma anche tanto altro.
Ci sono della analogie feroci ed elegantissime nei punti di svolta di questo episodio.
Kim che rovista nella borsa trovando un elemento di "rottura" o collisione con "Jimmy". Cosa vi ha ricordato?
Hank sul wc che legge quel libro, che rimugina su quella firma, su quella dedica.
La corsa sfrenata di Mike verso casa di Jimmy cosa ricorda se non la corsa in macchina di WW in Ozymandias?
Lalo sulla porta di casa, specchio freddo e cinico di quel volto impaurito di Jessie sul finale della terza stagione di Breaking Bad.
E' un continuo rimando ai fasti della serie tv da cui questo incredibile spinoff è tratto.
E più in profondità ci sono le scelte, le svolte dei personaggi.
Mike che vorrebbe riscattarsi salvando Nacho.
Jimmy che vorrebbe farlo correndo in aula per difendere un cliente.
Kim lasciando Mesa Verde per dedicarsi a casi pro-bono.
Siamo di fronte a 3 Walter White, molto diversi da WW e tra loro ma che intraprendono una "Bad Choice Road" che li porterà alla rovina. Mike e Jimmy sappiamo che non avranno un futuro roseo, di Kim non sappiamo nulla non essendo mai comparsa in Breaking Bad. E gli autori giocano con lo spettatore per tutto l'episodio, dandoci l'impressione continua che Kim possa morire da un momento all'altro.
Questo "gioco" conferisce una tensione incredibile all'episodio, resa ancor più efficace dalla credibilità di tutta la messa in scena.
Ennesimo episodio clamoroso di Better Call Saul che si conferma al momento la serie migliore del 2020, e non solo.
