SLC S27 Week5 - Let's🚌Play✈️OpenTTD Multiplayer🌐Competition🧑🤝🧑
Getting familiar with playing on a server was supposed to be the sixth and final lesson. However, it’s better to review—and I hope you will complete—your homework in a multiplayer game. Recorded gameplay videos would make this process slightly easier, but the best option is when I can see everything myself.
So, this fifth lesson will be about online play.
During the fourth week, I already showed you my server for completing homework, and some students have already created their own companies there.
But remember — any server can disappear. The game has autosaves, but you should also manually save your progress from time to time.
Starting Monday, I will restart this server and create a NEW, larger map specifically for the fifth lesson — so that there will be enough towns, resources, and land for everyone.
The sixth and final lesson of this season will be about trains. However, the topic of trains is so deep that it could fill an entire new season. There we will cover multiple types of signals for managing traffic flow, railway junctions, different station designs… all of that will be in the next season.
In my opinion, trains surpass all other types of transport — which is exactly why I saved them for last.
So I plan to submit an application for the next season — with the motto: “Teach a friend to play OpenTTD” 😁
And the main topics will be trains and the different types of multiplayer games in OpenTTD.
For those who haven’t read my article about multiplayer yet — here it is:SteemTTD Express
Multiplayer
So, let’s launch the game and enter multiplayer mode.
Next, in the Filter field, enter “steemit” to speed up the search.
In the server name, there is often a short description of the modes it uses — we will talk about all of that in future lessons of the next season (I hope!).
Right now, I will explain the most important indicators. At the end of each server name, you will see circles of three colors:
🟡(yellow) – The game version matches your version, but the server requires additional content (mods and expansions, known here as NewGRF). In theory, you can play if you download this additional content.
🟢(green) – The server version EXACTLY matches your game version — you can join and play.
🔴(red) – The server version does not match. For example, we are using the latest stable version 14.1, but version 15-beta is already available. Some servers run on that version, and some on older versions.
As you can see, some servers are marked with a lock icon — these are password-protected servers, like ours. 😄
So, type “steem” in the search field, and the server list will be filtered. Select the server with week5, enter your Steemit username in the name field, and join the server.
To prevent outsiders from joining us, I protect the server with a password.
In this window, you can see the server name, and then an icon with a pencil where you can still change your name.
You can also create a new company by clicking the person-with-plus icon.
From this point on, make sure to join your own company each time.
![]() | ![]() |
1 – Here you can see the name of your company and the players who have joined it.
2 – Don’t forget to immediately protect your game with a password, even a very simple one like 123 or 1111, since it’s only a temporary password for a short game session.
This lesson is quite short, and the assignment is simple — most of the work needs to be done directly on the server, and only a small part needs to be described in your homework report.
Howework
So, focus on the game, not the report 😁 — on building your own company and making a profit.
To complete the assignment, join my server and create a company. Use your Steemit username as your player name. The earlier you start, the more developed your company will be by the end of the week.
Since you are no longer playing alone:
The game will continue even without you online. This is good when your company is profitable, but bad if it’s running at a loss. I set it up so that if no players are online, the server automatically pauses. You can still observe everything in spectator mode.
Don’t block others from building; don’t place your roads in front of theirs. I made the map quite large, so don’t take over everything. Mark your city with your headquarters and develop mainly within your own city.
The assignment consists of two parts: a blog post on Steemit — 4 points, and completing tasks on the server — 6 points.
🚂Task 1✈️
The blog post can be about anything related to OpenTTD. Describe your vision of the game; maybe you discovered something new and interesting that wasn’t covered in my lessons.
🚂Task 2✈️
The tasks should be completed on the server. You may describe them in your article, or not — it’s up to you. Everything on the server is visible, so I can see it myself. You can just point out certain difficulties or features of your company. This assignment is meant as a summary of what you’ve learned in these four lessons. Of course, one of the main indicators of any business is profit. So there will also be a competition — who earns the most money — but that’s not the main point.
- Create your own company on the server
- Organize road transport
- Organize ship transport
- Organize air transport
- Demonstrate active use of transfers
- Refit vehicles to carry a different type of cargo
The more you do in your company — the better; the higher the profit — the better.
If someone new joins the challenge based on your recommendation — bonus points😁.

Has steemit server gone?
I was playing it a few moments ago but now the server is not available in the list.
try after a while, I started the server at home. Because of the war, our power plants and energy are being destroyed, the electricity is supplied on a schedule. Sometimes the electricity is on all day, sometimes it is turned off.
Aaah sorry to hear about the continuous war. I hope it will end soon. I tried it later and it worked.
I am only concerned if I will be able to complete as many things as I want in my transport company.
But it seems difficult using game on server. It will be more feasible if you keep the game running on local devices.
Btw thank you for the information.
There are other servers — not mine — so there’s always an alternative.
I plan to apply for this game again next season, with two homework assignments: Homework 1 for complete beginners and Homework 2 for students from the first season.
Most servers restart daily — winners are determined within 24 hours, and then the server resets.
But I don’t restart mine for at least a week. 😄
So, introduce a new friend to this game if I get selected for the second season!
Will the students be able to other random servers as alternative? And most servers are locked.
Best of luck for the next season. I will invite some steemians I hope they will join it.
Although power outages aren’t very frequent, a tough winter is coming😒🥸😒. So for now, I’ll keep my server running only during short breaks. There are several other servers where you can continue your work. Also, you can always save the server game and restore it locally on your PC.
Yes winter is starting here as well.
Yes I checked I could save it locally but did not test it completely. I want to ask if I save it locally and play there then will I be able to synchronize that data to server or the server will be separate.
Sorry I am taking your time but I wanted to make my concepts clear and to understand more about it.
No, there’s no reverse process 😄 It’s like parallel worlds — from here on, each will develop independently (the server and the local save).
Yesterday I played on the server and took second place. But that mode is exhausting — you can’t pause the game 😅 And after 24 hours, everything you built — your whole empire — disappears, and the server starts the competition all over again.
So I saved the game and will continue playing slowly… if I find the time.
Yes recently while playing again I saw some of my mines were not available at the place from where I was transferring material.
Did you mean that the mines were there and then disappeared?
Yes — mines and industries randomly appear and disappear from time to time.
You haven’t even discovered 10% of the game yet! There can also be a fluctuating economy, inflation over the years, and even UFOs that fly around and destroy your railways... 🚀
Yes they disappeared when I opened server after sometime.
I would like to play with trains.
The power went out (( for 3 hours, the server is paused. But your computer is auto-saving. You can download them from the
save\autosavefolder and make an article, in about 3 hours I will turn the server back on🎉 Congratulations!

In a few hours (about 12), I’ll restart my server and make a larger map,
and in week 5 you’ll start on a new server to complete the SLC27 week5 task.
In the next season, the servers we’ll be working with might exist for three days, one day, or even just a few hours — then the server restarts, and everything starts over again.
No, there’s no technical way to connect your old games — so everything begins again from the year 1950.
It will make difficult for the users to complete tasks within a limited time because from my experience I complete tasks one by one when I get time.
I hope in future there will be some ways to load saved files in the server to start from there saved games.
It’s worth setting up a few vehicles at the beginning to generate some profit, and then just checking in from time to time to keep developing the company further.
I think that’s impossible — imagine your map (with your cities, mountains, and your company) and my map, which also has its own cities, rivers, or even a different biome. How could the server possibly merge all that into one map?
It actually works the other way around — when I’m on a server that restarts every day and all the companies disappear, I can save that map on my own and continue playing solo afterward.
Greetings, friends.
@sergeyk, I have a couple of questions to clarify the instructions so I don't overdo it. Regarding this paragraph:
there is no radius as such. I think the map is big and there will be enough cities for everyone. And you can extract resources from one mine together. But if three players extract from the mine - then the mine will give only to two players with a better rating.
Try to develop a city with more inhabitants than me)))) City is not suitable - it grows three times faster

Okis, thanks
I built an HQ in the company a while ago, but after a while I came to join and saw that the server was not showing.
I started the game server on my home PC, because of the war that has been going on for 4 years with bad Russia, our electricity sometimes goes out.
Now I turned on the game
It is necessary to monitor the workload of the stations. At stations with many resources, additional transport should be sent.
There are about 10 trucks needed for grain and livestock — I would first buy half: 5 for grain and 5 for livestock. If after some time the station is still overloaded, then buy 5 more for each.
If there are too many vehicles at a station, it’s a good idea to build additional stations on the sides so that the trucks don’t line up in a long queue.
Thanks for your suggestion. Actually when I started transportation here, the production was low at first. Then I went offline. In the meantime, the production has increased. I am increasing the transportation.I hope you will help me with suggestions in the future.
It is very hard to play on the server. At first I got bankrupt.
Then I tried many attempts to join the game but it did not work. Each time it said network connection problem.
Now recently I started playing it again and I just created two stations and run passenger bus but again network lost and I was unable to do anything else.
I think it is better playing offline. It is full of hectic and hard for me to play on the server because it requires continuous flow of good connectivity but the network does not cooperate here.
I am very interested by joining this Dear Sir, but is it applicable in Cellphone?
