One of our hobbies is to visit special places in our country, which brings us joy and happiness while also expanding our knowledge. We recently visited the Urawatte Sea Turtle Conservation Hatchery, which was another special place located in Ambalangoda in the Galle District of Sri Lanka.

Sea turtles are amazing creatures that live in the ocean. However, they face numerous threats. The Urawatte Sea Turtle Conservation Hatchery works hard to protect them.

The Urrawatte Sea Turtle Conservation Centre collects turtle eggs from vulnerable beaches and keeps them safe until they hatch.

The conservation hatchery process begins with conservationists carefully locating sea turtle nests on beaches. These nests are frequently threatened by predators or human activity, so transporting the eggs to the hatchery increases their chances of survival. After being brought to the hatchery, the eggs are kept in a protected environment where they can develop safely. After hatching, they release tiny turtles into the ocean.

This Conservation Hatchery is open to the public every day of the month, except on Poya days. Both local and foreign people come to visit this place to gain knowledge about the turtle hatchery and release baby turtles into the ocean. The entrance ticket to this place is Rs. 500/- (7.1 SP) per each.

Our pet Beenu also joined us on our tour, but they did not permit our pet into the Hatchery. Therefore, my husband had to wait outside the hatchery until we finished our tour. After we finished our time, my husband went to this important location and learned about the turtle hatchery process.

There were several separate tanks to care for disabled turtles. Some turtles are kept as public exhibits rather than being released into the ocean. There were many different types of turtles, including the green turtle, hawksbill turtle, loggerhead turtle, and leatherback turtle. They stated that green turtles are the most common in Sri Lanka. According to them, Hawksbill turtles have beautiful shells and they are the smallest species of sea turtles.

If you wish to visit this place, you also can watch how to collect turtle eggs, care for sea turtle eggs, and baby turtles hatching, and safely release them into the ocean. Furthermore, you will gain valuable knowledge about these fascinating creatures.
