My travel destination on 12th Saturday | Soora Saradiel Village in Kegalle | Part 01
Hello, my dear friends, today I am going to tell you about my most recent trip to Central Province. This was organized by our Ladies Welfare Society. The group consisted of 30 members. We all left the Society hall where we had assembled at 5.30 a.m. Sura Sardiyal Village, Gadaladeniya Temple, Lanka Tilaka Temple, Ambakke Devalaya, Sri Dalada Maligawa, and Nelligala Temple are the destinations of our trip.
We arranged our own breakfast and Lunch for the journey. At about 7.00 a.m. we stop in Kegalle, Sri Bodhi Raja Temple to eat our breakfast. The Buddhist monks there offered us a warm welcome and provided us with everything we needed to have breakfast.
After eating breakfast, we traveled to Sura Sardiyel Village in Kegalle, which was close to the main route connecting Kandy and Colombo. This village was built by a famous specialist doctor called Ariyawansa in 2008. Now he is no more, but the organization was controlled by a board of directors. The ticket for adults is Rs. 150.00 and for children Rs. 80.00.
The tour guide explained Saradiel’s story step by step very nicely using the statues which were built there with cement. This village has been built to remember the Sri Lankan Robin Hood (Soora Saradial). The entire project is built on the tales of Saradial. About 6 acres of the area had been used to create this 18th-century traditional village. It was an enjoyable, educational, and humorous place. Nice atmosphere to enjoy. Many locals and foreign tourists visit this place to see the legends brought back to life. Saradial was a hero to the villages of his area. Saradial stole from the rich and distributed it among the poor of this village. Uthuwam Kanda is the place where Saradil was hiding. Children should visit this village to learn about our history through statues.
Sardial Village is a true habitat of Sri Lankan Robbin Hood named ‘Soora Sardial’. This village has been built based on the 18th-century village life.
Board as Deekirikavlage Sardial Appu, he later became Sura Sardial owing to his legendary status bestowed upon him by the villages. He stole from the rich and lent it to the poor, and served as a re-distributor of the wealth in the village. For the British, Young Sardial was an infamous, notorious rebel.
The trip to this village took roughly an hour and a half. We took so many photographs of this famous place and village statues. We later departed that location after grabbing a cool drink from the shop outside of the village. We then traveled to Lanka Thilaka Viharaya. I will share the remaining portion of my tour with you in my upcoming blog.
