Leaf and human

Leaf is a flat structure and a part of the plant, which attached to the stem of tree. Leaves has variety of shapes, sizes and colors.

Now let’s see what is the function of leaf. The main function of a leaf is to produce food for the plant by photosynthesis. Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll, the substance that gives plants their distinctive green color. The leaves help to absorb carbon dioxide from the air and combine it with water that flows through the roots of the plants to produce food and release oxygen into the atmosphere. The flatness of the leaves allows sunlight to enter their cell more easily.

Leaves are important to the animal kingdom because they absorb CO2 and release it into the atmosphere. In this way, it also contributes to the prevention of global warming. The water released by photosynthesis or evaporation contributes to the water circulation cycle.

When we say a tree is shady, we mean that its leaves are plentiful and large-bladed, providing shade from the hot sun. Leaves are also significant because they are one of the best ways to identify different plants.

Leaves are regarded as a gift from nature, and they are beneficial to us as humans in a variety of ways. Leaves play an important role in human lives, and without them, there would be no life on Earth. Leaves help us to fulfill a variety of requirements such as food to eat, air to breathe, medicine to cure diseases, materials for decoration, and many more.

It is essential for human nutrition when considered as food. I don't know if you believe it or not, but in Sri Lanka, we have over 250 type of leaves that can be used in salad, sambal, or porridge. All essential nutrients are required for a healthy diet. Aside from fruits and vegetables, several leaves added to our diet will provide incredible health benefits to our lives.

When we consider leaf as medicine, that are great source of medicines. According to modern history, many life-threatening diseases were cured by preparing paste from different plant’s leaves. Leaf plays an important role as a medicinal herb in Ayurvedic medicine.

When we consider leaf as industrial way, the world-famous tea powder is produced by using tea leaves. Leaf is used as a raw material in a variety of industrial processes, including paper and cosmetics. Perfumes and other oils are extracted from different leaves.
