IESL Professional body

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) is a professional body for all engineers that was founded in 1906. The governing body of IESL is the Council, which is elected by the general membership every year and is led by the President. Only corporate members have the right to vote in the election. He or she must be a Corporate Member to be a member of the Council. Presently it has a significant number of engineering professionals in all parts of Sri Lanka and abroad.

One of IESL's key functions is to ensure the quality standards of engineering professionals practicing in Sri Lanka by conducting a Professional Review of suitably qualified members for the status of 'Chartered Engineer' and 'International Professional Engineer.'

Members of the IESL include Student Members, Associates, Companions, Associate Members, and Corporate Members.

All engineering undergraduates from Sri Lankan government universities are eligible to join as students. Private university or foreign university students have to go through an evaluation process before they enrolled. To obtain IESL student membership require copies of a birth certificate and Advance Level Certificate, as well as a letter from the university stating that he or she is a student there.

To become an Associate Member, require to submit a degree certificate in addition to the above. After becoming an Associate Member of the IESL and as long as your name is in the Role, you can use the title "Eng" before your name. For example Eng. Imantha Dilshan.

Membership can be applied online through IESL Website. If you are only a member, the user name is your email address and the password is your National Identity Card number with a simple 'V'.

To advance new technology, IESL organizes seminars, workshops, visits, and public lectures for its members. The seven sectional committees are formed for this purpose as Agricultural and Plantation Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical & Process Engineering, Electrical and Electronics, and IT & Telecommunication Engineering. By pre-registering online, any member can participate in these educational programs.

IESL also has a very comprehensive library for its members, with lending and referring facilities. Members’ Lounge is another facility that members can hire for any activity with a small payment. Another well-known activity that IESL organizes every year is the Techno Engineering and Technology Exhibition.

The IESL headquarters are located in Colombo 07, Western Province, in a highly residential area. This institution has a history of over 100 years and has regional offices in eight other provinces to serve the membership.
