Every year, in October or November, people celebrate Diwali, a festival of lights. In Sri Lanka, Deepavali was the name we gave to Diwali. For Sri Lankans, Deepavali is a public holiday. That means, it is day off for the General Population, and schools and most businesses are closed. Sri Lanka's Hindu community observes this holiday. They celebrate it similarly to the Indians. The celebration includes lighting oil lamps, cracking crackers, and distributing gifts and food to loved ones. It also marks the beginning of Sri Lanka's Hindu calendar-based year.

There are a lot of reasons to celebrate Diwali. According to one legend, after defeating King Raavana, Lord Rama traveled back home with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. To mark his return, the locals lit Diyas or Lamps along his route. The next tale is the return of the Pandavas after 12 years of Vanvas. The other major story is dedicated to Lakshmi and other gods. This also marks the beginning of the Indian fiscal year.

Traditionally, Diwali is celebrated for five continuous days each consisting of a different ritual. Not just Hindus but also Jains, Sikhs, and many other faiths celebrate Diwali. This festival is celebrated in Sri Lanka, like every other festival. Sarees are the predominant clothing choice for women at this festival. Similar to the Shalwar Kameez worn by women, the Jyoti Kurtha is a type of suit worn by males. It's lovely to see youngsters having a good time at the festival.

Happy Deepavali you all.

Thanks for reading my blog.
