Alibaba unveils self-developed AI chip for cloud computing services
The Hanguang 800 neural processing unit, after providing Alibaba representatives, is expected to significantly speed up and optimize the performance of machine learning tasks, with energy. It was developed in the T-head division, which operates within Alibaba's DAMO Academy and specializes in semiconductor research.
The Alibaba Hanguang 800 is already being tested to implement various functionalities in its e-commerce stores, such as smart search and recommendation of related products. According to the presentation, the old Taobao system so far took about an hour to categorize a billion images daily uploaded to the platform by vendors. The Hanguang 800 takes about five minutes to do the same job.
The novelty is welcome for the Chinese digital industry, as it comes at a time when companies are seeking to reduce their dependence on foreign technology due to a trade dispute with the US.
