Ugh... how this little creatures seem to grow so damn fast.

Providing the proper nutrition is important for building strong bones and teeth, adding muscle, and supplying all the energy needed for their little furry shenanigans. So let's talk about pupper nutrition and how to proceed with feeding the newest members of your pack.

Puppies’ nutritional needs differ from adult dogs. Puppies are growing rapidly, building bone and muscle, and developing organs. Adult dogs are maintaining what they already have. Puppies needs extra nutrients to fuel his growth. Puppies should get solid food starting at about four weeks, when they’re not able to get all the calories they need from the bitch's milk. Most puppies are weaned by six weeks. It is recommended that you should moisten dry kibble under the age of eight weeks and let it sit long enough to become soft.

This is an important time in a developing doggo's life. It is paramount to buy the best puppy food you can find. I really like the foods available from Costco as they are a great bargain and the nutritional content is above par. This is also what I feed my adult dogs and it maintains a healthy coat and supplies them all with enough calories to keep them running free and getting into trouble on the farm. Don't be cheap.

After a month or six weeks on the food, you need to observe your puppy’s health. The puppy should be playful and energetic, with a shiny, thick coat. Formed brown poos are a sign that your pupper is digesting most of the nutrients in the food.

Puppies should eat three times a day from weaning through four to six months, if possible. After six months, twice-a-day feedings are fine. Since I mostly have border collies and my puppies are border collies, free feeding is safe. I haven't had a problem free feeding border collies as they don't tend to be as obsessed with food as other breeds I have dealt with. If you can't feed three times a day... they're animals, they can and do adapt. Most people feed only twice a day and that is okay as well. However, three is what is recommended.

Also... DON'T FEED YOUR PUPPIES HUMAN FOOD!!!! It is a dog, not a human. Don't feed it ice cream unless you want your best friend to get the diabeetus.
