It's likely a biological hold over from the male orgasm, our genetals develop out of the same cells pre sex differentiation during fetal development. So the neural networks there are likely homologous, and thus because an orgasm is necessary for men to propagate the species, women get it also as there is no way to remove the respective neural path that leads to one. I think that it's a bit more than that. Personally I think it helps women forget all the dangers associated with childbirth. Maybe it releases hormones and endorphins that makes woman want to actually engage in sex. just my 2 cents.
This doesn't explain why they have to have an orgasm, it only explains why they derive pleasure from sex. That's @justtryme90's point. The male orgasm is designed to propel sperm out of the male's body into the female's body. That's why sudden and finite spasms are required. The spasms eject the sperm and they proceed until the testes are sufficiently drained. The female orgasm has no corollary. It seems to increase the odds of fertilization, but this could theoretically be accomplished without the spasming. It is more reasonable to assume, from an evolutionary standpoint, that as natural selection was "searching" for a way for women to increase their odds of getting pregnant it reappropriated the genes relating to the male orgasm to serve this purpose in the female.
