As most people maybe aware the largest octopus in the world live along the north western side of North America but that not the only octopus to dwell in these temperate waters.
The much small Ruby, or Red Octopus (Octopus rubescens). These shallow water octopus only grow up to 10-15 cm and only weigh a few grams. All octopus can an change their colour and texture, making their appearance highly variable. Ruby's colour can vary from a deep brick red, to brown, to white, or mottled mixtures of the three. One distinguishing feature of these octopus which allows them to be identified is they set of three fleshy eyelash-like bits under each of their eyes.
Finding and photographing these little guys is truly a treat.
