Artistic Armour

Lined Chiton-1.jpg

This colourful, armoured little creature is a Lined Chiton (Tonicella lineata). Chitons are a type of mollusk living mostly in the north Pacific. All chitons have a muscular foot for locomotion, body plates and a complete digestive tract. Lined chiton covered by 8 smooth plates and the girdle around the plates is smooth and leathery, often with a row of lighter spots or bands. These little guys only grow up to about 5 cm long.

The most unique thing about Lined Chitons is their endless array of colour variations. A zigzagging pattern of black/brown lines can be seen all over a background of yellow, orange, pink, blue, orchid, and lavender. This crazy colour scheme aids in its camouflage around coralline algae, where it is usually found.

If disturbed or removed form the water, Chitons will roll up into a protective ball similar to a wood bug on land. Take the time and care to place them back where you found them and let them relax and adhere back to the rocks.
