Father's Day Musings - The Ups and Downs of being a Dad
Father's Day in Australia
Today is Father's Day in Australia. It's always a day that I cherish with my kids as I wake up to coffee and some pressies in bed. I never knew if I wanted to be a Dad as a sometimes irresponsible young adult. That all changed when I started teaching and knew that if I was this committed to someone elses kids, then I had to commit and bring some of my own into the world.
Luckily for me, I already had a willing partner and we had been together nearly 12 years before we finally got married and had our first girl. Four years later and the next little cherub came along and I now couldn't imagine not having either of them in my life.
This morning I was woken to their screams and smiles and yelling of 'open this one first, open this one first'. Both my girls are under 10 and the things they do and say amazes me everyday.
This is the card they gave me today:
Pretty fitting probably? Or are they just trying to tell me something.
For those with kids at a young age, they come home with awesome hand-made presents for you and this is what my littlest came home with from daycare:
She tells me that the teacher asked her the questions and then wrote down the answers. FYI, I only have one brown eye and my hair is not black. It is interesting to see what comes from the 'mouths of babes!'.
Having kids also comes with trials and tribulations and it is not always about being your kids best friend. Sometimes you have to take a strong stance and use the 'parent voice' to educate them on 'right and wrong'. Respect comes from being fair and loving as a parent which i have learnt from my own parents growing up. I am learning that there is no 'right or wrong' way to parent and you learn as you stumble through each day.
So I sit here, listening to one of my favourite artists spinning on the record player on this beautiful spring morning:
Thinking how lucky I am with family I have been blessed with. Yesterday @DrWom quoted the following in one of his posts which really struck a chord with me:
Somewhere, under the same moon, the same sun, the same stars; bombs are shredding perfect bodies.
So if you are sitting at home enjoying the day with your loved ones, spend a moment to think about those out there who have lost loved ones or are being persecuted against their own will.
We only have one life, make it a good life.
To All the Dad's out there, HAPPY FATHERS DAY. May your kids bring you lots of chocolates and socks (and maybe something your really want too!).
Have a great day!
Thanks for reading.
