in #science6 years ago

Solar panels will no longer be exclusive to experimental and luxurious cars. Hyundai and Kia have announced that they plan to install them on the roofs and bodies of some of their cars.

Solar energy can not only charge the batteries of electric cars but it can and will be used on cars that use fossil fuels as well. The only caveat, you will no longer get the enjoy the view from your cars’ sunroof.

Three different generation of solar panels on cars is in the plans. The first will be used only on hybrids with a traditional roof. These will be able (depending on the weather) to charge 30 – 60 % of the hybrid's battery. The second generation will use semi-transparent panels and thus will allow people to get their sunroofs back. The third generation that is currently in development will allow the car to use not only panels on the roof but on the body of the car as well, increasing the amount of energy gathered.

Hyundai hopes the panels will be able to produce up to 100 Wh of energy. Though, you should remember that is under ideal circumstances – during noon of a clear sunny day when the sun is shining all the time on the roof of the car.
