My Awful Best Friend

in #life8 years ago

Procrastination (/pɹoʊˌkɹæs.tɪˈneɪ.ʃən/). That little devil that sits on my shoulder ready to throw its diabolical love spells into my ear every time I get an idea or inspiration for some project.

(Kinda looks like this little fucker here)

"That's good, but are you sure you can do that now?"
"If you sleep on it, you'll be able to do it better in the morning" (as if that ever happens)
"You're too hungry, eat first and then you can do this better!"
etc.

(Haha, so you wish)

See, there is a common theme with all these excuses to delay whatever action to a more blissful tomorrow. People often like to attribute procrastination under a rather vaguely defined trait called "laziness". These people, however, completely misunderstand the real reasons behind procrastination - and the real reasons behind laziness, too. Yeah, procrastination isn't really a self-existing thing that just likes to intrude people's privacy and start taking their space under control like some imperialist who still hasn't realized it's 2018 and it's not okay to do that. No, this little dude is actually another one in disguise - what we are actually dealing with is the even more devilish and intruding little elf called perfectionism (/pərˈfekʃənɪzəm/). (Oh shit, no not that one!)

Perfectionism, that motherfucking one person who just can't decide whether they want to be your friend or enemy. One day they bring flowers and cake and all's well and you enjoy the awesome things you can do together by making everything pretty and perfect, and on others all hell breaks looks because nothing is good enough for them, so you feel discouraged from even trying. You wow to yourself it's the end and you throw them out of your house...
just to discover they're back in the morning. And you being you, you take them back and give them breakfast. Some time everything is peaceful until the same cycle repeats. Again. And again. And again.

Until one day you finally realize that you have the power over yourself and that no one can have power over you - but to truly take governance over yourself, there is only one thing you have to do: forgive yourself. Because when you accept yourself as who you are, no one else - yourself included - can inflict their power over you. You invited this friend to your house in the first place, but you know what - it's okay even if they stay. They can watch TV while I go outside and play. And once in a while, maybe we can do something together.

Oh, and btw, since we were talking about creatures sitting on your shoulders, here is a nice song by Mika:

I hope you all have a great weekend!
