What determines cell size?

in #stemq7 years ago

Cells vary in size and shape, all across biosphere. One of the most puzzling question in the field is, how is decision made, for how big a cell can grow. For instance a bacterial cell can have size as small as 0.1 micron, while other prokaryotes can be as large as 100 micron.

Some blood cells have size of about 10 microns, while a neuron can grow as large as a meter in length. Even though environment play a role in shaping some of it, we know that to a large extent this is also cell autonomous. For instance fibroblast vs keratinocytes grown in culture maintain a characteristic cell size.

What do you think is most important physical or biological constraints that determine the cell size?
