What about a Steem book publication division? Not limited to English

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

The bad experience with Amazon has made me think about a book publication enterprise that is decentralised.

Why not a steem based book publication?

Corporations like the Amazon, Penguin and other big names rule the field. The problem is, when someone hacks your account and they (amazon)care less, it is the author who loses the rights and no one else.

What if Steemit decided to start a book publication division?

It would be decentralised
It would help the author keep the rights for eternity
The earnings in crypto would be hassle free
Many writers would gain an opportunity to get their work published without many hurdles

Who gave me the inspiration to think about it?

The livestream of Steemfest Day 2 and the points covered by @aggroed

I do hope the publication thing that I suggested becomes a reality.

Suggested to whom?

To all, in general.

I do not have the means to do it. I can only dare dream to be a published author one day.
It doesn't cost a dime to dream.

For the record - I am an Indian who speaks Tamil and Malayalam and Hindi. By book publication, I did not mean that it should be limited to English language alone. I hope you don't get me wrong.

There are no hurdles to self-publishing on Amazon or Smashwords or Ingram Spark. Amazon and Smashwords are completely free. Granted, there is no real credibility associated with work self-published in this manner unless enough sales are made to establish the author as legit. People complain about this system, but the vast amount of sub-par work being self-published speaks for itself. Editors and publishers exist for a reason.

You are right

The main difference between Steemhouse Publishing and other traditional publishers is that we curate authors, not just manuscripts. We're not sure yet what our typical submissions process will look like, but it will involve working with talent through mentoring rather than just sending form rejection letters. That's one reason we won't strive to publish in the same volume as the Top Five--we're going to take more time with each author and with each manuscript. We'll offer more support. Cryptocurrency investment will give us the extra financial padding we need to do it this way, rather than just race for the bottom line with every launch.

All the best for your project. I hope you get the investments. I also meant publishing in other languages too. So, it would involve teams from many countries and that is where @steemit can step in,I guess

Maybe. We ended up not having to do any fundraising. It's all been pretty self-sufficient so far, and our first book launch went pretty well. And I dunno about teams from Steemit...there's not much literary experience here, to be honest. I would envision us doing more onboarding of mainstream talent than using the existing population, but you never know what the future might hold.
