E-cigarettes increase the risk of heart disease and cancer

Smoking of electronic cigarettes may increase the risk of some types of cancer, as well as heart disease. This is the preliminary results of laboratory tests on mice and human cells conducted at the New York University Medical School. The data were published yesterday in the American Academy of Sciences' Collection.

According to the study, nicotine fumes may be more harmful than previously thought. Rodents exposed to money for 12 weeks have inhaled as much as someone who smoked an electronic cigarette for 10 years.

According to the study, nicotine fumes may be more harmful than previously thought. Rodents exposed to money for 12 weeks have inhaled as much as someone who smoked an electronic cigarette for 10 years.

At the end the experiment, scientists found damage to lung, bladder and mouse heart DNA, as well as a decrease in the level of recovering proteins in the cells of these organs. Such processes were not observed in the second group of mice that breathed filtered fresh air during the same period.

A similar deleterious effect was also observed on human cells of the same organs exposed in the laboratory to nicotine and the derivative carcinogenic substance nitrosamine. The levels of tumor mutations in these cells were significantly higher.

Although e-cigarettes contain fewer carcinogens than ordinary cigarettes, evaporation may pose a greater risk of unleashing lung or bladder cancer and heart disease, the authors conclude.

Manufacturers of devices claim that they are a safer alternative to tobacco products. However, long-term effects are not conclusive.

In 2016, US Surgeon General Vivek Merthi said that the spread of e-cigarettes among young Americans is a major concern for public health and cites an increase in the use of electronic cigarettes by 900% among high school students.

A report from the American Academy of Sciences, published on January 23, concludes that nicotine in e-cigarettes can lead to addiction among young people and push them to smoking cigarettes. However, authors who analyzed 800 scientific studies add that smoking electronic cigarettes is less harmful and can help smokers quit smoking. They therefore conclude that it can not be said that the vamping has a positive or harmful effect on public health.
