Mistakes to Avoid When Looking for the Good in People
We all want to find the good in people. It's human nature to want to be liked, and when we are surrounded with people who seem happy and positive, we naturally start to follow them. But not everyone is as lucky as us and has the ability to find the good in people. If you're one of those people, then you need to read this article.
Good things don't come for free. You have to work hard for them. It won't come on its own. So if you want to find the good in someone, you have to first work very hard to not let it escape your notice. Look for the good in other things, other than just people.
For example, when you're doing a job, try not to take for granted your tools and equipment. Do your job well, but don't take these for granted. Look at them and appreciate them, as they will contribute to your success in your line of work. When you do a good job, people will generally appreciate your efforts and the extra effort you put into things, and that includes your tools and equipment.
When you're talking to other people, talk with them like they're your best friends. The only reason someone would think you're trying to be rude to them is because you don't like them. It's never your fault, so take it easy and don't criticize others publicly, even if they look or act like an ass.
Be kind and give compliments when it's earned. Compliment others the same way you'd give a compliment to yourself. If you like somebody and they make you laugh, tell them so, even if it wasn't intentional. People will love it when they feel like you notice them and appreciate their good qualities, even if they weren't purposely trying to receive a compliment.
When the going gets tough, remember that you'll be alright, so keep a positive attitude no matter what. Everyone has their own little set of setbacks and challenges in life, and you'll have them come up. You may even experience something that makes you feel bad about yourself, but when you make a big deal out of it, people will think you're overly sensitive and make you feel guilty for it. Instead of making a big deal out of it and being upset about it, focus on how you can fix it and move on.
When you see other people doing well and doing things right, tell them that's the way they should be and try to help them out. Don't put down their actions or accomplishments, but tell them how you could've done things better if you were in their place. That's a good attitude to have, because then you'll avoid getting in arguments or having drama with them over trivial things. It's important that you focus on the good things in people instead of dwelling on the things that aren't so good. By focusing on the good things in others, you'll have more faith in yourself and be able to look at bad situations with more dispassionate eyes.
One of the biggest mistakes that people make is when they start to worry and nitpick a small thing. If it's not a big deal, don't even give it a thought. However, if you're constantly nitpicky and complaining about even the smallest things, your opinion of yourself will go down just from that one point. You have to learn to accept that the world is not a stage and you can't get ahead overnight. Have a positive attitude and you'll be able to see the good in most people.
