Arbutus Unedo , (Corbezzolo). A typical Mediterranean plant.

In questoperiodo che si riprende ad andare nel bosco mi piace ricordare con voi le principali specie che si possono incontrare, almeno nella mia regione.
Uno di questi è l' Arbutus unedo un arbusto sempreverde o piccolo albero della famiglia delle Ericaceae, originario della regione mediterranea e dell'Europa occidentale a nord della Francia occidentale e dell'Irlanda.

Molto decorativa per via del bellissimo fogliame e delle bacche colorate è impossibile non riconoscerlo.
La pianta è molto comune in Sardegna (Italia), dove vivo e si trova non solo nel bosco ma anche , sempre più spesso, nei parchi e giardini privati per via del suo indubbio interesse ornamentale.
Ma questa pianta è molto interessante per i cercatori di funghi perché, spesso, i funghi buoni e ricercati di “Amanita cesarea” si trovano proprio nelle vicinanze di questa pianta. Quindi è importantissimo riconoscerla.

Il suo particolare frutto è una bacca rossa ( ma anche gialla ) , di circa 1-2 cm di diametro, caratterizzato da una superficie ruvida. Il frutto del corbezzolo matura proprio in questo periodo , in autunno, in contemporanea alla successiva fioritura.
È commestibile; il frutto è dolce quando è rossastro. Molto buono devo dire , e sempre piacevole assaporarlo direttamente dall'albero!
Il contrasto di frutti e fiori con il verde brillante delle foglie rende questa pianta molto interessante anche all'interno dei nostri giardini mediterranei e come vi dicevo prima viene utilizzato anche come pianta ornamentale.
Molto resistente, il corbezzolo non necessita di grandi cure ed è particolarmente indicato per climi caldi e secchi.

This plant is very interesting for mushroom seekers because, often, the good and sought-after mushrooms of “Amanita cesarea” are located right in the vicinity of this plant.

The fruit is a red berry, 1–2 cm diameter, with a rough surface. It matures in about 12 months, in autumn, at the same time as the next flowering. It is edible; the fruit is sweet when reddish.
The contrast of fruits and flowers with the bright green leaves makes this plant very interesting also within our Mediterranean gardens. Very resistant does not need great care and is particularly suitable for hot and dry climates.

A precious use of this beautiful plant is in the field of herbal medicine for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.
A curiosity: from the flower of this plant and thanks to the hard work of bees, the "bitter honey" is produced, which is a typical of my island, which is very useful for fighting the sore throat.
