The Great Mosque
The center of Durres is this mosque that adorns the entire square of this city. This square and everything around the mosque will be full of people who went out for a night's walk and sightseeing of the mosque and the rest of the city. When I first saw it, I saw that it was completely different from the church in my city. Everything is so simple and reduced, it looks beautiful, but also powerful.
I like to see something new and learn something new. The first time I saw the mosque inside, it is the same as outside, simple and beautiful. It was strange for me to take off my clothes at the entrance and walk barefoot inside, as soon as I stepped inside I felt an unusually beautiful soft base under my feet, I needed to lie down and fall asleep immediately, the carpet in the mosque was too soft and clean, I liked that feeling and that culture of theirs.
Like I said I like to learn something new, so I studied a little bit about the mosque I was in and I would like to share that with you.
The Great Mosque was built back in 1938 and occupies a central place among the architectural works of this period in Durres. It was built with a facade facing east, completing other ensembles of public buildings in the central town square. The mosque is characterized by its size with environments suitable for ritual practice. The "Movement Against Religion, Religious Prejudice and Backward Behavior" of February 6, 1967, destroyed the dome and its minaret and turned it into a cultural institution, called the "Youth Palace". After the 1990s, with the establishment of a democratic system, the great mosque returned to its function as a cult building, preserving its original architecture. It was renovated in two phases, during the early years 1992-1994, and later 2004-2006.
