Church of Saints Olga and Elizabeth

The Church of Saints Olga and Elizabeth - a beautiful pearl of Lviv non-wood architecture. The church was built in memory of the popular Empress Cesarevo Elizabeth of Bavaria (Habsburg), known as Sisi, the wife of the Emperor Franz Josef I. Austro-Hungarian.

Today, this building is the highest in the city, its height is 88 meters.

The temple was erected in 1903-1911. Architect Theodore-Marian Talovsky designed and constructed the building. The church was built on the money of the railwaymen and therefore one of the chapels was named St.. Hubert - the patron saint of the railroad.

It is believed that, according to the architect's plan, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Elizabeth had to take a look at the Greek Catholic Cathedral of St. Jura, if you look at her from the side of the central station.

The neo-Gothic style of the cathedral repeats many elements of the Gothic architecture: high-rise rover spiers, arched windows, a portal with a large rose in the center, an internal vertical space. Peter Voitovich, whom the Poles called "our Phidias," decorated the church with a sculptural composition "Crucifixion with the Constant".

The Church of St. Elizabeth survived more than one war; it was fired by Ukrainians during the war of 1918-19, it was damaged by an air bomb in 1939, and yet the church continued to operate. He was closed in 1946, and in the 70's he was sent to the warehouse. And only in 1991 the church was handed over to the Greek Catholic parish. It took more than one year to restore the temple. The first services went with candles - there was no electricity.

Now the temple is striking by its simple and noble interior - bright space, white walls with elements of decoration of dark red color, brilliant stone floor, majestic columns, moving in arched overlays high above the head.
