In most serial killer movies, it doesn't dive deep to show why this killer become like this, or why he start killing people? I think , in a Serial Killer movie, finding the motive is the key to resolving the case. And this movie creatively shows how the procedure take place.

"May God Save Us" (or "Que Dios nos perdone") is a Spanish crime thriller directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen that was released in 2016. Its complicated plot depicts the clashes in investigative approaches between Alfaro (Antonio de la Torre) and Velarde (Roberto Lamo), showing their personal struggles amid Madrid's sociopolitical turmoil. The film's multilayered exploration of themes surrounding crime, society, and human complexity earned praise, highlighting the directors' ability to craft a gripping thriller against the vibrant yet tumultuous backdrop of Madrid's history.

Initially, the film focuses on the detectives' pursuit of a serial killer who commits horrific crimes. It skillfully contrasts their personal struggles, Alfaro's violent nature, and Velarde's psychological perspectives, resulting in an attaching and diverse exploration of their characters.

The investigation reveals societal tensions, especially concerning police violence and social unrest, heightening the complexities of the detectives' quest for justice. However, as the story progresses, the film shifts away from its richly layered approach and shifts towards a more refined and familiar depiction of the killer, losing some of its previously established depth.

Antonio de la Torre and Roberto Alamo's outstanding performances flesh out the characters, highlighting their particular weaknesses and complexities. The film carefully captures the atmosphere of Madrid, illustrating the socio-political tensions and various viewpoints of its citizens, bringing a genuine essence to the storytelling. Sorogoyen's direction, combined with Alex de Pablo's cinematography, creates a compelling portrait of Madrid, particularly through a gripping suspense sequence set in the city's heart.
