Entertainment Blog #145 | The Girl Before [2021] - House with Mysteries for Free...
The Girl Before is a four-part television thriller miniseries based on the novel of the same name by J.P. Delaney. It's an HBO Original series. It follows the story of Jane Cavendish, a traumatized woman who becomes lucky to live alone with an amazing minimalist house designed by the architect Edward. However, as Jane digs deeper into the house's secrets, she discovers that not everything is perfect as it seems.
The miniseries has a talented cast, including Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Jane Cavendish, David Oyelowo as Edward, Jessica Plummer as Emma Matthews, and Ben Hardy as Simon. The performances of these actors were generally well-received, with Mbatha-Raw and Plummer especially shining in their roles.
Talking About The Story...
The story unfolds as both Jane and a couple named Simon and Emma vie for the opportunity to live in the minimalist house, situated on 1 Folgate Street. People are chosen to live in this house from a questionnaire and a viva with the creator of the house, Edward. The house comes with strict rules and restrictions, Emma died in the house three years prior to the arrival of Jane.
Jane comes to this house having a traumatic past, losing her child before birth. It seems like this elegant house was empty for 3 years with no guests in it. And now.. there's Jane. As Jane's relationship with Edward develops, mirroring the pattern Edward had with Emma, she begins to question the cases connected to Emma's death and wonders if Edward was involved.
My Experience..
The Girl Before explores themes of trauma, power, and obsession, creating a tense and suspenseful atmosphere. The series digs into the psychological complexness of its characters, exposing their secrets and inspirations over the duration of the episodes. It's well-plotted. I highly enjoyed it.
Ratings..
In terms of critical response, The Girl Before received mixed reviews. While the performances of the cast were praised, the series was criticized for marketing it as a mystery. Some reviewers found the plot lacking in suspense and the resolution underwhelming. However, others appreciated the artful approach taken by the miniseries, which set it apart from similar genre entries.
Overall, The Girl Before presents a fascinating premise and benefits from strong performances by its cast. The exploration of psychological themes adds depth to the story, although the execution of the mystery elements may leave some viewers wanting more. If you enjoy character-driven thrillers and can appreciate the artful approach taken by the series, The Girl Before offers an interesting viewing experience.

I would say the title and the first pic rang the bell for me. Since it also has psychological themes, I think I should add this to my list.
Yeah.. It's compelling.. But the execution at production of the series is a bit underwhelming
