Entertainment Blog #142 | The Idol [2023] - The Weeknd in a TV Show...
In the interim, I heard that he's going to perform as a main character in a TV Series. And it's going to distribute by HBO and then I knew.. that's it.. It's gonna be a hell of a show. And in the back of my head, I was thinking about how its reviews are going to be. And I thought it's gonna be lots of 1 stars and 5 stars. Anyway, let's take a look at the series.
The Idol is a highly anticipated drama television series that revolves around the life of Jocelyn, an aspiring pop idol played by Lily-Rose Depp, and her complex relationship with Tedros, portrayed by Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, who is a self-help guru and the leader of a stylish followers. The show explores Jocelyn's journey as she tries to reclaim her position as the sexiest pop star in America after experiencing a nervous breakdown that led to the cancellation of her last tour.
Talking About The Story...
The series kicks off with Jocelyn preparing for her comeback single release, facing the challenges of a leaked offensive selfie and coordinating damage control with her team, which includes managers, record label executives, and publicists. Jocelyn's life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Tedros at a nightclub and develops an immediate relationship. Their relationship quickly becomes complicated as they explore into questions of truthfulness and engage sensually while reworking Jocelyn's song, "World Class Sinner".
As the story unfolds, Jocelyn's journey is twisted with the exploration of her personal trauma and the influence of Tedros' cult-like followers on her life. Tedros gradually claims more control over Jocelyn's decisions and moves into her mansion with his followers. Jocelyn's managers become more and more concerned about her dumping her original album and embracing a different creative approach under Tedros' influence. Despite growing alarm about the nature of Tedros' group, Jocelyn continues to grow closer to them, eventually eye-opening her traumatic past and directing her pain into her art.
My Experience..
In terms of the overall experience, The Idol offers a glance into the dark side of the music industry, exploring themes of power, control, and personal redemption. It combines elements of drama, romance, and psychological thriller to create a visually enchanting and provoking narrative.
Despite its flaws, The Idol manages to provide a certain level of entertainment, although it may not fully deliver on its potential to push boundaries. It offers a mix of popular elements and attempts to tackle weighty themes, making it a polarizing viewing experience. It's true, it was unable to live up to its expectations, but it's a great show.
Ratings..
The Idol received mixed reviews from critics, with negative reception focused on aspects such as the script, direction, and sexual content. The series has been criticized for its sensed lack of substance and its tendency to rely on sensationalism. However, some positive aspects were highlighted, including the cinematography, production design, and the performances of Lily-Rose Depp and the supporting cast. Vanity Fair praised the entertainment value of the show and the performances, but noted that it may not live up to the expectations of those seeking something truly groundbreaking.
In summary, The Idol is a drama series that delves into the complex life of an aspiring pop idol and her complicated relationship with a self-help guru and cult leader. While it has received negative reviews for its script and sexual content, the series offers a visually engaging narrative and showcases strong performances from the cast. It's full of twists. And I think you should give it a try.
