Make your own toxin-free DIY Lip Balm Recipe with essential oils

Lip balm is an essential beauty product that I always have on me. In fact, I have multiple balms for all occasion — in my bag, my bedside table, desk… you get the gist! I also ensure that the lip balms I buy are organic and chemical-free, but this can get expensive. Compare the price of a normal, drugstore lip balm to a high-quality organic one and you’ll find that the price quickly adds up — especially if you’re like me and have more than three on the go at any given time!
This led me to look into making my own toxin-free DIY natural lip balms.
You can imagine my shock when I realized how easy it is to make your own. I wasted so much money over the years when the answer lay on my kitchen table!
Making your own lip balm isn’t like a science experiment — it’s super easy to do and you can whip up a big batch to store or give as gifts. You will need a few specific tools, which I consider as a one-time investment, and high quality therapeutic essential oils — these are non-negotiables.
Don’t scrimp on the quality of your essential oil — buy the best you can afford and your lips will thank you for it in the long run. Read the ingredients label and make sure that the one you’re using is therapeutic, food-grade, non-toxic and chemical-free. A good essential oil will add a lovely, natural flavor to your lip balm, unlike the artificial, plastic taste you get in your mouth when you use the drugstore brands — ugh!
As well as beautifully scented essential oils, a good lip balm needs a high-quality fat base. I like to use coconut oil or pastured bacon fat (yes, you read that right!) Next time you cook bacon trim the fat off it and keep it refrigerated to use in your DIY lip balms.

Prep time: 20 minutes
Serves: 13–15 balms

Bacon flavor

4 tbsps of pastured bacon fat
2 ½ tbsps of organic beeswax
10 drops of copaiba essential oil
10 drops of frankincense essential oil

Mint flavor

1/4 cup of coconut oil
2 tbsps of organic beeswax
22–25 drops of peppermint essential oil

Lemon flavor

1/4 cup of coconut oil
2 tbsps of organic beeswax
14 drops of lemon essential oil

Essential lemon oil can cause photosensitivity, so if you do use this lip balm avoid going out in sunlight oi. I would recommend keeping it at your desk, and using it while you work.

Utensils:

3 pyrex glass cups
Empty lip balm tubes
Flat baking tray
Syringe
Measuring spoons and cups
Metal spoons to stir
