Practical Guide to Turning up/Getting Started

in #life8 years ago (edited)

Turning up is half the battle when it comes down to doing the things you have been putting off. These could include writing, painting, exercising or reading.

In this post I will share three simple methods I use daily to get started or turn up.

Gather what you need

Often we don't turn-up or start something because we don't have everything we need. Yes this is simple but you would be surprised how many people get stopped here!

Identify what you need first, be sure to question if you actually need it or if you are just coming up with another reason to procrastinate.

Are you wanting to paint? Gather your Brushes, Paints, Canvas and create a space with adequate lighting.

Wanting to be consistent in hitting the Gym again? Make it easy by having your gym clothes ready to go.

If we don't prepare these things in advance they will become obstacles which will surface as excuses down the line. The most productive people I know prepare the things they need, every day.

Clear the way!

Clear all the obstacles in the area between you and the action you want to take. Any form of resistance that might appear small will increase in severity tenfold when the time comes.

You want to paint yet if your painting area is consistently in disarray or requires set up this will likely lead to you putting the whole thing off for another time. Keep your space clean and organised so its easy to sit down and start right away.

Do you want to write? Maybe you should close those 13 windows you have open in your browser, put your phone on silent and don't let anything stop you from getting to the task at hand.

Simplify and Plan

Don't over complicate things by thinking too many steps ahead. Just focus on what the first few steps are and do that. The other steps will reveal themselves as you go. Write down an easy plan that is specific and practical.

If you are planning to go to the gym, keep a log and plan what exercises you will do and for how long.

When I am painting my miniatures, I write down the next 2-3 painting steps I need to take before going to bed. When I get to painting the next day I look at my painting journal and just start.

With less to think about you should be ready to go!

Remember that turning up is more than half the battle!
