New Painting - The Remarkables, New Zealand - Painted Outdoors - Art and Photography

It's been a good day for painting outdoors en plein air today here in Queenstown, New Zealand where I live. It was a beautiful spring day with scattered clouds, perfect conditions for painting outdoors.

I gathered up my pochade box easel, paints and brushes and walked down to the lake front, where I painted this art work below.

The Remarkables, New Zealand, 200mm x 330mm, oil on canvas panel painted en plein air.

I will show you some of my painting process of how I created this art work. 

This was the view of the Remarkables mountains I decided to paint, this is a prominent mountains range sat behind Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu.

I started out by sketching the scene on my canvas panel, which I had previously prepared with a layer of burnt umber, which helps with my colours and tones.

I always start by painting the sky, then I get my shadows and darkest tones in as quickly as possible and that way it doesn't matter if the light changes.

Whilst I was painting the weather changed and clouded over, luckily I had my darkest shadows in at that point. This is my pochade box easel at the lake front.

Next I start painting in the highlights of the mountains and trees keeping in mind my tonal values.
