Literature is the "deepest trough" in the ocean of language. To dive into it, then one needs to explore the science of language. It is not only a matter of good and correct language, both spoken and written (syntax), but also how to find meaning (semantics), psychological layers and so on. And, unfortunately, poetry is the deepest trough of literature. Prose, such as short stories, novels, drama scripts and so on, is closer to its original meaning (lexically).

As for poetry, he is more free, especially modern poetry. We think of it this way, there is a message that you want to convey through a story, then you convey it through a short story. Let's just say, the short story is only 3 sheets of A4. And when conveying the same message through poetry, the 3 sheets are pressed into 1 poem which may only be 10 lines.

However, load the same message weight. How, for example, did Bertold Bretcht write his thoughts on socialism through his short poem? So every word bears a heavy duty.

That's why choosing the most semantically and aesthetically appropriate words (diction) is something that will happen to you when writing poetry. If prose is easier to accept, analyze (because it can be done using a syntactic approach) and its meaning is absorbed, then to do the same with poetry, you need to work hard.

Poetry is not "hiding meaning" or "secrets" but conveying a message in a straightforward manner through few words. The question, related to the second question.

even though many people like and write poetry?is it true that they "have" liked and written poetry? Are "quotes" as written (and claimed to be poetry) by many popular celebrities already in the category of poetry? Hard work and sufficient knowledge (including outside of literature) such as philosophy, psychology, sociology, to biology, are the keys for someone to be inspired by a poem, rather than just being enchanted by word games.

So, back to the question, why are poetry books less popular than other types of literature? My answer above already answered it.
