All the King's men

in #poem7 years ago

Crossing bridges half burnt
Each step shaking ash.
Cinders from the war between
Falling through the slats.

Creaking boards that bow.
Suspensions that sway and split
As winds whip and throttle
The distant beacons lit.

Bodies in high mountains
Filling the gully near to burst
Kings hid behind their iron bars
The peasant and knight are cursed.

Wage this war on my behalf
The enemy lies ahead
The royals feast in joyous halls
While droves are falling dead.

Exhausted and crestfallen
Legs give out and buckle down
The bridge that joins the kingdoms
Plummets to the ground.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
The Jester sings out of tune
But the joker is the sane one
And the king as mad as loons.
