Keeping Your Mind Focused On The Results

In this era, people's attention has shifted from the process to the end-result. Yes, no matter how great the process may look, if it cannot guarantee the result, then it is of no use going with the process. Expertise is simply the way of doing a hard task in a seemingly easy way and still achieve the desired result. This is just to let you know that expending physical energy through hard work may not be what will guarantee the result but putting in smart work. So you have to focus more on the results and then devise the easiest way to achieve it.

It is not how long you did something that matters but how well you have done it. If you spend 6 days to complete a task for example, and someone else spends 6 hours on the same task and achieves the same result, then the reward is still the same irrespective of the time it took to achieve it. If you want to get to a destination, there may be multiple routes to arrive at the destination and the one you choose is up to you.

A very insightful thing happened a few weeks back. I went to my friends workplace to deliver some documents to him when I found out that their company was facing a particular technical hitch with their system of heavy-duty machines. The first engineer they called to help them fix it told them about the process of diagnosing the problem to determine how to detect the problem because it has caused them two days of zero productivity. The engineer told them that he will dismantle and check the machines one by one to determine what went wrong and why it is not working well but it will take minimum of 5 days to do that. That means that for those days, there will be zero production.

Not satisfied with the response, they sent for another engineer from another consultancy company but amazingly, this engineer had extensive knowledge about those particular machines. So when he came in, he ask them to switch on the machine so that he can hear the sound of the engine. As soon as the machines came on, he moved along the side of the machines and listening attentively. He got to a spot and stopped, then he marked that spot with the marker in his hand.

While the people were wondering why he marked it, he then reached out to his box of tools and took out some tools and opened that part of the machine. He then discovered that the problem is from a loosened nut inside the main rotor. He simply tightened the nut back, and touched a few things there and then coupled it back. He asked for the machine to be switched on again. Amazingly, the weird cranking sound had stopped and the engine started working well. What would have taken about 5 days to fix got fixed in less than 1 hour.

The only thing the world is interested to see is not your hustles but the results you can show for them. It is result that gives substance and credence to the labour. Obviously, attempts are not rewarded, but results are. In an Olympic racing competition for example, no matter how hard you flap your hands and stretch your legs, as long as you do not hit the finish line first, you will not be rewarded with the gold medal. This reminds me of what a friend once said:

Hard work is not as important as result-oriented smart work.

Your process, your means, your methods, your works, and your hustles are only justified by your results. So whatever you are doing, you have to keep your eyes focused on obtaining the results, not putting in works in futility. Once you keep your mind on results, you will not waste your time on the processes that you know will not deliver the result. If you try out a method and it does not seem to deliver the result, you do not have to change the entire idea nor the dream, you just need to change the method and try again.
