IS TODAYS MUSIC EDUCATIONAL
In the modern society music is playing a vital role and man is experiencing it subconsciously. When walking on the streets we often hear people listening to music or humming their favourite song. Music seems like nothing but entertainment, but is it true? Do we only listen to music so we can enjoy the rhythm?
It was wisely said by Aristotle:
“Music has the power of producing a certain effect on the moral character of the soul, and if it has the power to do this, it is clear that the young must be directed to music and must be educated in it”.

Music as a means of Improving Imagination:
Music can improve one’s imagination, man starts imagining stuff in his own way when he listens to a story or listens to a song. It also helps to improve memory and can even help to improve a child’s academic performance. A child needs to have better memory skills in order to survive in the society, thus expanding the ability to memorise is an extremely important part of their mental development and to achieve this purpose listening to music is one of the best choices. Music can also enhance the vocabulary of a child, and therefore should be an important element in a child’s education.
The Music of Today:
Today’s music also defines the culture and today’s culture is changing far more repeatedly than it has ever before. And by listening to old music a man can imagine how the old culture used to be. Music is a representation, an incarnation of what is constantly changing around the world. Man gets to know what the culture of different countries are around the world.
Shinichi Suzuki, a music teacher had said:
“Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.”
Impact of Music on Man:
Music has a strong emotional impact on a man. It can control a man’s behaviour and create atmosphere that can change the moods of people. Music is a type of motivation, when a man goes to the gym to exercise he puts on an upbeat playlist, when the weather feels romantic, he puts on jazz music. When he gets up he knows exactly what song to play that can motivate him throughout his working hours. A man when sad, angry or outraged when listens to music he starts to get a little calm, he starts to shed the anger and once again he becomes his lively self. Music has the power to motivate a man, to take away his sadness and to make him fall a certain way.
Hidden Meanings behind each Word:
Every song has a secret message hiding behind its lyrics. It is up to the man listening how he perceives the message. Every man has his boundaries, he knows what is right and what is wrong. When looking at and listing to the lyrics of a rap or hip hop song nowadays it is seen that most of the lyrics glorify drugs and violence, but does it change the behaviour of the man who knows his boundaries, who knows what is good and what is bad. A study shows that music that honours drugs and violence does not affect the morality of a man who knows his boundaries.
Conclusion:
In the end music has the power to influence our society emotionally, culturally, and morally. It also helps in the development of a child’s memory. A man also becomes aware of what is happening around the world through music. It has the power to motivate a man to the point till he achieves what he desired or dreamed of. So it is safe to say that music does in fact educate people.
According to Gerald R. Ford, he understood the fact that music is educational:
“Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them-a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.”
